nbn® new development charge
If you’re moving into a newly built home or apartment and signing up for an nbn® service, you might come across something called the “new development charge
There’s plenty to consider when you’re preparing to move house, and moving your nbn® with you often gets forgotten.
Make sure you’re connected as soon as you’ve got the keys with our guide to moving your nbn® connection.
Handy tip: when signing up to Swoop, we recommend adding an address that you have access to either side of your requested activation date to ensure your modem arrives safely.
Check your new address can connect to the nbn®.
Use our address checker tool to check that your new address can connect to the nbn®, and to find out which connection type is available. If the nbn® is already available at your new address, the transfer process should be straightforward. If not, you may need to explore alternative options until the nbn® becomes available.
This is a good time to review your household internet plan and decide whether you need a faster internet plan. If you’re not already connected to fibre to the premises (FTTP), the move may be your opportunity.
Check my addressTo schedule the nbn® installation or transfer.
Let us know about your move a few weeks in advance to get your nbn® moving house the same time you do. Providing your new address and planned move date will enable us to schedule the transfer of your connection.
If an nbn® box is already installed at your new home, the transfer may be quick. If not, we may need to arrange for a technician to install a new nbn® box or check the existing setup.

Make sure you pack your equipment and bring it with you: your modem, router and any cables. Leave any nbn®-supplied equipment (the black box and attached cable) at your old address. This equipment is the property of NBN Co and is registered to a specific address, so it will not work at your new home.
If the nbn® box at your new address is missing or damaged, let us know immediately so we can arrange a replacement with NBN Co.
Contact UsConnect all equipment and test your internet.
On moving day, unpack and set up your modem and router at your new house. If you have an nbn® box at your new address, follow the instructions provided by us or refer to your user manual to connect your modem and router to it.
Once everything is set up, test your nbn® connection to ensure it’s working properly. Check the internet speed and stability, and make sure all devices are connected. If there are any issues, contact us for assistance.
These steps will help you smoothly move your internet service and get connected as soon as you arrive at your new home.
Contact usIf the box is missing, damaged or not installed yet, contact us as soon as possible. We’ll coordinate with NBN Co to arrange installation or replacement. This may require a technician visit and could take a few days.
No, the nbn®-supplied equipment must remain at the address where it was installed. It is registered to that location and will not work at another address. This equipment is also the property of NBN Co, so it cannot be taken with you, used at a new premises or resold. Just make sure you take your router, modem and cables.
NBN Co will arrange a time to install the nbn® equipment, if it hasn’t been done already, and activate your service. If the property is already connected, simply get in touch with us before you move in to ensure you’re connected as soon as you move.
In most cases, NBN Co will install the nbn® network at your home at no cost. For new homes that have never had internet before, there is a $300 nbn® New Development Charge that applies.
You can read more about the nbn® New Development Charge here.
If your new home is already connected to the nbn®, we should be able to relocate and connect your service in 1-3 business days. If your new property has not been connected to the nbn® before, then an nbn® technician may have to come to your property to activate your new service.
Yes, in most cases you can take your existing Swoop plan with you. If the same nbn® technology is available at your new address, your plan can continue as is. If a different connection type is used (e.g. FTTP vs FTTN), you may need to make a small change to your setup.
If you notify us early, we’ll aim to have your service connected by the time you move in. Most relocations are completed within 1–3 business days, depending on availability and whether installation work is required.
Yes. Let us know your planned move-in date and we can schedule your connection to activate as close as possible to that date. It’s a good idea to use an alternate delivery address for your modem if needed.
