Get your new home connected with nbn®

Building your own home is an exciting adventure, but it comes with lots to think about. This includes what internet connection is available, and how to connect your new home.

For most new constructions, the nbn® is likely to be the best choice. And luckily, getting your nbn® connection at a new house is generally a straightforward process.

Quick tips:

  1. Plan with your builder for your current and future nbn® needs, and the type of connection.
  2. Check if your new home includes nbn® and whether it uses an embedded network.
  3. Reassess your internet needs as they may have changed.

The following tips cover different new build scenarios, including building a new house, buying off the plan, and moving into an existing home.

1) Building a new home

Tip: Work with the developer or builder to confirm nbn® availability and speed.

Confirm nbn® availability 

It’s important to verify that the nbn® is available in your area. You can enter your address into our address checker tool to easily find out whether the nbn® is available at your new house. This will also tell you what technology is in use, which will determine what speed plan you can sign up for. 

When searching for a block of land, check with the developer to see if the development is nbn®-ready or if they have submitted an nbn® New Developments application.

If the nbn® isn’t available at your address yet, you can consider an alternative, such as Swoop Fixed wireless

Consult your builder or developer

Discuss your internet needs with your builder or developer, including in which rooms you’ll need it most, where you’d like to place your nbn® utility box and how usage might change in the coming years (like if you’re having kids or renting out your house). 

If you’re designing an nbn® connection for a new house that is large or built with thicker walls, you’ll need to account for that to ensure your connection can travel all around the house. Check out our guide on how to extend Wi-Fi range here

Consider if you want a landline connection, though it’s not required for an nbn® connection, as explained in this blog.

Knockdown rebuild

If your existing home is connected to the nbn® network and you are knocking it down to build a new home on the same block of land, you may need to submit a Relocation Works application. 

This will help you get the nbn® network moved to the most appropriate spot, making it easy to reconnect when your home is built.

2) Buying off the plan

Tip: Ask if it’s built with nbn® and whether it’s an embedded network.

When buying a new build in a unit block or complex, check for an embedded internet connection by carefully reading developer materials, asking real estate agents, and checking NBN Co.’s website. 

An embedded connection is convenient, as it allows quick activation and high-speed internet (though you should confirm what speeds will be available to you). You can also save on setup costs. 

However, an embedded network means you’ll be limited in your choice of providers.

3) Buying an existing new home

Tip: Make sure the nbn® has been installed and is ready to go.

Your new home has likely been connected to the nbn® during the build process, but be sure to confirm this and check which technology is in use.

Some locations require an nbn® technician to come and finalise the connection before we can switch you on. If this is the case, you’ll book a time slot that works for you. Once the work is complete, you’ll be ready to go!

4) Ready to move in?

Tip: Reassess your internet needs as they may have changed.

Select an nbn® plan 

If you’ve only got access to FTTN, you’ll be limited to 100 Mbps. 

But if you’re in an area where you can opt for FTTP or you have an embedded network, you may be able to go up to 1000 Mbps.

Set up your equipment 

When your home is complete, your nbn® utility box should be connected and ready to go. You’ll just need to plug in your modem and/or router and connect your devices.

What is the nbn® new development charge?

If your nbn® is already connected to your home/service address, there is no cost for installation.

The nbn® new development charge may apply in areas not already serviced by NBN Co. Swoop may be required to connect services onto the nbn® network if you’re in a new development and not already connected to the nbn® network. NBN Co may charge $300 to connect your premises to the nbn® network. If applicable, we will bill that charge to you.
